Measure inside bark

Optional - for taper calculation

Scaling Note: Measurements should be taken inside the bark at the small end. Log rules account for sawing waste and taper.

Doyle Rule

Formula: ((D-4)²/16) × L. Most conservative, favors buyers. Best for logs 12-28" diameter. Common in eastern US.

Scribner Rule

Based on diagram method. Moderate estimate. Most widely used lumber rule in the US, especially Pacific Northwest.

International 1/4"

Most accurate for all sizes. Accounts for 1/4" kerf. Favored for hardwoods and government timber sales.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Which log rule should I use?
Doyle for small logs (12-28"), Scribner for general use, International for large logs or accurate estimates. Check local market standards.
Why do different rules give different results?
Each rule has different assumptions about sawing efficiency, kerf width, and taper. Doyle assumes high waste, International assumes efficient sawing.
How accurate are log scale estimates?
Typically ±10-15% of actual recovery. Factors include sawyer skill, grade requirements, defects, and equipment efficiency.
