1. Standard Imperial Board Foot Formula
When thickness and width are measured in inches, and length is in feet:
When all dimensions are in inches: BF = (T″ × W″ × L″) ÷ 144
2. Board Feet to Weight Formula
Convert board feet volume into weight using dry species density:
One board foot represents exactly 1/12th of a cubic foot of wood volume.
3. Metric to Board Feet Conversion
For international timber measured in millimeters and meters:
BF = m³ × 423.776
Conversely, 1 Board Foot equals 0.00235974 cubic meters.
4. Lumber Cost Calculation
Calculate total cost including price per board foot and waste allowance:
Example: 100 BF with 15% waste at $8.50/BF = 115 × $8.50 = $977.50.

Example 1: Hardwood Walnut Dining Tabletop
A woodworker plans to build an 8/4 Black Walnut table measuring 2 inches thick, 40 inches wide, and 8 feet long composed of 4 matched boards.
- • Total volume: (2″ × 40″ × 8′) ÷ 12 = 53.33 Board Feet
- • Weight calculation (Walnut density @ 38 lbs/ft³): (53.33 ÷ 12) × 38 = 168.88 lbs
- • Cost at $12.00/BF with 15% waste: 53.33 × 1.15 = 61.33 BF × $12.00 = $735.96
